I shall now briefly set forth one or two methods of responding to questions, in order to awaken the functioning of prajñā.
1. Suppose someone asks, “What kind of person can not even the Buddha save?” Answer, “What kind of person can the Buddha save by means of Dharma?” Then ask in return, “After all, is it the Buddha who liberates sentient beings, or do sentient beings liberate themselves?” (The word “should” must not be rigidly interpreted as meaning that there is no alternative, for fundamentally there is no fixed Dharma.)
2. Suppose someone asks, “Those who practice the Heart-of-Heart Dharma often claim realization. What evidence is there for it?” Answer, “Those who practice and realize know it for themselves. Though they know it, they cannot explain it to one who has not practiced.”
3. Suppose someone asks, “It is said that becoming a Buddha through practice requires three great asaṃkhyeya kalpas. How is this to be understood?” Ask in return, “From what time does an asaṃkhyeya begin to be counted, and at what time does it end? And what, moreover, do the words asaṃkhyeya mean?”
4. Suppose someone asks, “Why are afflictions themselves bodhi?” Answer, “Because bodhi itself is affliction.” Or say, “Water freezes into ice, and ice melts again into water; they are not two different waters.”
5. Suppose someone asks, “Why is it said that wishing to eliminate afflictions only adds another illness?” Answer, “Because of the wish to eliminate them.” Then say further, “This is not to say that afflictions need not be eliminated. It is only because the root has not been understood that worldly toils are instead increased. If the old illness remains unresolved of itself, why invite a new illness?”
6. Suppose someone asks, “What is your present state?” Answer, “I eat my own food; how could I know whether you are full?”
7. Suppose someone asks, “After the Buddha’s parinirvana, should precepts be regarded as fundamental?” Answer, “No.” He will surely be greatly startled. Then say further, “It is not a matter of precepts or no precepts; the question is whether they are upheld. The Buddhadharma will not perish; it perishes through those who destroy the Buddhadharma.”
8. Suppose someone asks, “Who is one who destroys the Buddhadharma?” Answer, “The one who is questioning me right now.”
9. Suppose someone asks, “Why is the meaning of this discussion so lofty?” Answer, “Discussion is itself not meaning; meaning itself is not lofty. If meaning can be discussed, it becomes subject to thought and discrimination. If there is high and low, how can there be equality? What need then is there to cultivate Buddhahood? No contention, no contention.”
10. Suppose someone asks, “What is an arrogant person?” Answer, “One who speaks of there being arrogance.”
11. Suppose someone asks, “Why is the Chan School the foremost?” Answer, “The Chan School cannot speak; it has never called itself foremost.”
12. Suppose someone asks, “Why does the Buddha have a separate transmission outside the teachings?” Answer, “The Buddha never had a separate transmission, for the Buddha never established teachings, nor did he establish inner and outer. It is you, sir, who make such distinctions.”
13. Suppose someone asks, “How can one become a Buddha?” Answer, “Only one who can enter māra can become a Buddha.” If he asks, “How does one enter māra?” answer, “Dualistic views are māra-views. Enter nonduality through duality; where there is neither Buddha nor māra, there it is.”
14. Suppose someone asks, “Why speak of the Chan School while practicing the Heart-of-Heart Dharma?” Answer, “Originally it is neither Esoteric nor Chan; yet it does not depart from Esoteric Buddhism or from Chan. Nevertheless, it is not Chan-Esoteric Buddhism.”
15. Suppose someone asks, “Why do Chan practitioners mix in so many habits of mockery and sarcasm?” Answer, “These are methods, not habitual tendencies. To cling rigidly to methods and not understand adaptation is itself habitual tendency.”
16. Suppose someone asks, “Is Pure Land practice the most reliable?” Answer, “No.” He will surely disagree. You should then say further, “It is precisely because the Pure Land is so reliable that students become lax and fail to practice sincerely; they practice only one-tenth of the Pure Land. Therefore, it is not.”
17. Suppose someone asks, “Why do you particularly say that becoming a Buddha in this very life is easy?” Answer, “It is not I who say so; it is the Buddha who says so. In my foolish view, even this very life is still an expedient. My greed is most fierce: I insist upon becoming a Buddha this very moment. The sutras say, ‘One shall attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi.’ Yet I have never seen anyone dare to read ‘shall’ as meaning ‘at this very moment,’ and thereby acknowledge becoming a Buddha at once. Again, the sutras say, ‘Know that this person is the Tathāgata; with the Buddha’s wisdom, he fully knows this person,’ and so forth. Yet I have never seen anyone dare to place a full stop after ‘the Tathāgata,’ thereby acknowledge that he himself is the Tathāgata.”
18. Suppose someone asks, “What is meant by wild Chan?” Answer, “Wildness is not Chan. ‘Wild’ means uncouth; what the world calls uncouth Chan is this. Yet whether it is wild or not, uncouth or not, is known through one’s own realization and cannot be fathomed by others.”
19. Suppose someone asks, “What is a kalyāṇamitra?” Answer, “One who can know himself and can also recognize a kalyāṇamitra is himself a kalyāṇamitra.”
20. Suppose someone asks, “Why does the Chan School so often display startling conduct?” Answer, “It is intended to make you raise doubt. Doubt means doubting yourself. Once you can raise doubt in yourself, you will be willing to seek instruction and investigate. The reason for deliberately showing what is strange and startling is to test whether you can be frightened, whether you will take the bait, whether through this you awaken or do not awaken. It is all merely to make you leap out of this circle, not to contend with you over superiority or inferiority.”
21. Suppose someone asks, “What is the method of practicing the Heart-of-Heart Dharma?” Answer, “When you directly realize that the Pure Lands of the ten directions are unattainable, there is no purity that is Pure Land, no Chan that is Chan, no Esoteric Buddhism that is Esoteric Buddhism, nor any Dharma that is the Heart-of-Heart Dharma. This is the Heart-of-Heart.”
22. Suppose someone asks, “How should one spread the Heart-of-Heart Dharma?” Answer, “Seek only doubt and reproach, not widespread praise; do only what is real, and engage in no excessive disputation.”
23. Suppose someone asks, “How can one seal the mind?” Answer, “The mind cannot be obtained—what is there to seal?”
The Buddhadharma has no fixed Dharma; how could there be any Dharma to speak? When you gentlemen can yourselves inquire into whether you are able to apply this prajñā Dharma, be careful not to speak of it lightly to those who do not understand, lest you mislead them and cause them to give rise to a mind of retreat. As for Dharma gates for discerning capacities, Dharma gates for transmitting the Dharma, and the esoteric intent of the Vajrayāna practice of the divine union of male and female, you gentlemen already know them. They should not be spoken to those who have not practiced; therefore they should not be made public, and their recording should cease.
Mencius said, “The way of learning is no other than recovering one’s lost mind.” Yet does one recover what has been lost or not? From where is it recovered? Once recovered, how is it to be placed? If one knows that ultimately there is no mind to recover, then we people are indeed making much ado. Do you understand?
