Further, through repeated practice and recitation as described above, liberation should be attained. If one is constrained by karmic force and still finds it difficult to understand, repeat the instructions and recite them many times for the person; great benefit will naturally result. At this time, call the deceased by name again, recite the following text, and tell them: [Instruction 13]

Alas, good son (name): If you have recalled but failed to retain the various instructions given above, then at this time the form of your former body will gradually disperse, vanish, and no longer be seen, while the body of your next existence will become increasingly distinct. Overwhelmed with sorrow and distress, you will think: “Alas! I have suffered so much. Whatever body I am to enter, I must go and seek it.” Once this thought arises, you will rush to and fro, drifting and wandering, not knowing where you are going. At this very time, the cycle of rebirth in the six realms appears. The stronger the karmic affinity with a particular realm, the more intensely that realm’s light will appear.

Alas, good son (name): Listen carefully! What are the lights of the six realms? The light of the deva realm is grayish white; that of the asura realm is dark green; that of the human realm is pale yellow; that of the animal realm is dark blue; that of the hungry ghost realm is pale red. Only the light of the hell realm is like smoke or mist. When these lights appear, the color of your body will take on the light-color of the realm in which you are karmically destined to be born.

Alas, good son (name): At this time, these instructions are of the utmost importance. Whatever light appears, you should regard it as light radiated by the Great Compassionate Protector. Visualize its light slowly approaching you; it is the supremely compassionate noble Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. This is an exceedingly profound and essential instruction, capable of closing off the place of rebirth.

Or, if you have previously practiced any yidam, contemplate it as an illusory realm, wholly without inherent nature. Continue this contemplation for a long time, and you will know this as the “pure illusory body.” Then contemplate the form of the yidam: from the outside inward, let it gradually vanish until it cannot be found. Then abide for a moment in the dharma realm, in a state of non-attachment to luminosity and emptiness.

Then contemplate the yidam again, and next contemplate the clear light, alternating between these contemplations. Next contemplate your own inner wisdom of realization; it too gradually vanishes from the outside inward. Emptiness pervades everything, luminosity pervades everything, and the dharmakāya pervades everything. Abide equally in the dharmakāya, free from conceptual elaboration and appearances. Through this state, one can naturally close off the place of rebirth and attain Buddhahood.
